Retatrutide: Real Trials, Unknown Vials

Lilly's retatrutide trials in one table, kept apart from the vials sold under its name.

  1. 1The FDA and the EMA have not approved retatrutide; Eli Lilly plans to apply to the FDA in early 2027.1,2
  2. 2The largest published trial: people given the most drug lost 25.0% of their weight on average, against 3.9% on placebo.3
  3. 3Vials sold under its name were never in those trials; a counterfeit tested by Australia's regulator held semaglutide, no retatrutide.4,2

The short answer

Retatrutide is an experimental drug from Eli Lilly.1 It is one molecule that acts on three hormone receptors: GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon.5 Online it is nicknamed "GLP-3".6 Lilly's trials are large, and most are in medical journals.7,8,9,3,10 The FDA and the EMA have not approved it.1,2 Lilly says it "cannot be legally sold or marketed for human use."1 The vials sold under its name were never in those trials.4

The catch
Every trial result here comes from Lilly's own drug, in amounts Lilly chose, with doctors watching. None of it tells you what is in a vial bought online.

  • Seven trials with results in one table: people, weeks, main result, and whether a journal published it or Lilly only announced it.
  • A dated timeline from the first trial in people, in 2019, to the FDA filing Lilly plans for early 2027.
  • The side effects the trials counted, and how many people stopped because of them.
  • Australia's lab test and Victoria's liver-injury alert on products sold as retatrutide, in their own words.

The fair line
The trial numbers describe Lilly's own drug, in amounts Lilly chose, with doctors watching, not a vial bought online. Every trial here is Lilly's own, and two are known only from its press releases.4,3,9,10
