As of September 2026, the FDA and the EMA have not approved GHRP-2. Its only recognized clinical use is in Japan, as a test of whether the pituitary gland can release growth hormone. The human data are limited to small studies, and WADA bans it in sport under class S2. Bodybuilders use it, and nothing on this record tells you what is in a vial sold to them.

What is GHRP-2?
GHRP-2, also called pralmorelin, is a lab-made chain of six amino acids that prompts the pituitary gland to release growth hormone. It was developed in the 1980s and 1990s, building on work by the endocrinologist Cyril Bowers. Its only recognized clinical use is as a diagnostic in Japan, and bodybuilders use it outside that role.
Does GHRP-2 work?
As a diagnostic, it is used in Japan to test whether the pituitary gland can release growth hormone. For muscle building, fat loss or anti-aging, nobody knows: no randomized, placebo-controlled trial has tested long-term safety or benefit.
What we found. 1 completed randomized trial counted on the record. 3 rows listed below: one small study in healthy men that used a placebo, one paper on a urine test for doping control, and one lab characterization.
| Study | Tested in | Status | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lab characterization of pralmorelin | Lab dishes | Published | Described as a strong trigger of growth hormone release from the pituitary gland |
| Food intake study in healthy men | People | Published. Small | In the short term, the men ate significantly more than on placebo |
| Method for finding GHRP-2 in human urine by LC-MS/MS | People | Published. A doping-control method | A lab method built to detect GHRP-2 misuse in athletes' urine samples |
A lab-dish result cannot tell you what happens in people.
How we count a trialIs GHRP-2 safe?
Nobody knows over the long term. Documented effects in people include increased appetite and a short-lived release of growth hormone. Long-term effects on the heart, on metabolism and on cancer signalling are unknown. Rigorous long-term human safety trials for the way bodybuilders use it do not exist. So much for the compound. A vial adds a second set of unknowns, covered below.
Is GHRP-2 legal?
- United States
- Not approved by the FDA.
- European Union
- No EMA marketing authorisation.
- Elsewhere
- Used in Japan only as a diagnostic. It tests whether the pituitary gland can release growth hormone in patients thought to lack it, and it is not used there as a treatment.
- Sport
- Banned in sport under class S2 of WADA's Prohibited List.
Not medical advice. Approval and sport status as of . Medical disclaimer
What is in a vial sold as GHRP-2?
The record says bodybuilders use GHRP-2 hoping to raise growth hormone levels. It does not say how the compound is sold, and it lists no test of a vial sold to the public. A "research use only" label guarantees nothing about purity. A certificate of analysis counts only if it names your lot number, a lab with no stake in the result, and the method used. Purity and identity are separate tests.
Three questions to ask the seller:
- Which lot number is this certificate for?
- Who ran the test, and are they independent of you?
- Does the report confirm identity by mass spectrometry, or purity alone?
What don't we know?
- Whether it is safe over the long term. Long-term effects on the heart, metabolism and cancer signalling are unknown.
- Whether it does anything for muscle building, fat loss or anti-aging. No randomized, placebo-controlled trial has tested long-term benefit.
- Whether its diagnostic use in Japan says anything about ongoing use. The record describes a test, not a treatment.
- What is in any given vial.
The other side
A personal result is real to the person who had it. A single account still cannot separate what the compound did from everything else going on at the time, the vial included.
What would change this record?
- A sponsor-run randomized controlled trial with long-term safety follow-up, reviewed by the FDA or the EMA.
Change log
- Amino acid sequence corrected to D-Ala-D-2Nal-Ala-Trp-D-Phe-Lys. The record had listed Ala-Trp-Ala-Trp-Phe-Lys. PubChem (opens in new tab)
- Record checked. No change logged yet.
Three questions to ask next
- What does 'research use only' actually mean?
- How can you tell if a peptide vendor is legitimate?
- How do you read a certificate of analysis?

More questions about GHRP-2
Is GHRP-2 approved by the FDA?
- No. It has no FDA approval and no EMA marketing authorisation.
Is GHRP-2 the same as pralmorelin?
- Yes. Pralmorelin is another name for GHRP-2.
What is GHRP-2 used for in Japan?
- Only as a diagnostic. It tests whether the pituitary gland can release growth hormone in patients thought to lack it. The record says it is not used as an ongoing treatment.
Is GHRP-2 banned in sport?
- Yes. WADA bans it under class S2. The record also lists a published lab method built to detect its misuse in athletes' urine.
Has GHRP-2 been tested in people?
- Yes, in small studies. One compared it with placebo in healthy men and found that they ate more in the short term. The record lists no long-term human safety trial.
