Also known as GSH.

The two randomized trials on record tested glutathione taken by mouth. For repeated IV use, a published review calls the safety data inadequate.

Short answer

As of September 2026, neither the FDA nor the EMA has approved injectable glutathione for any use. The two randomized trials on this record tested glutathione taken by mouth. For repeated IV use, meaning into a vein, a published review calls the safety data inadequate. It is sold compounded for skin lightening, and you cannot tell from the outside what a given vial holds.

What is injectable glutathione?

Glutathione is a small antioxidant molecule that the body makes in every cell. Higher levels are loosely linked to lighter skin tone, which is why the injectable form became popular. It spread, especially through wellness clinics, as an off-label skin-lightening and detox treatment, a purpose it was not developed for.

Does injectable glutathione work?

This record lists no randomized trial of the injectable form. The two trials it counts tested glutathione taken by mouth, and they reported modest skin-lightening effects.

What we found. 2 completed randomized trials, both of glutathione taken by mouth. No randomized trial of the injectable form is listed. 2 published reviews, one of them on the safety of IV use.

Is injectable glutathione safe?

Nobody knows whether repeated IV use is safe. No completed randomized trial of adequate size has tested it. A published safety review called the data inadequate. It cited reports of kidney and skin harms after heavy, repeated use without supervision. All of that concerns the molecule. A compounded vial raises questions of its own, and those come next.

What is in a vial sold as injectable glutathione?

The record says injectable glutathione is sold compounded and off-label for skin lightening, and that it is popular in wellness clinics. Neither randomized trial above tested an injectable product. A certificate of analysis counts only if it names your lot number, a lab with no stake in the result, and the method used. Purity and identity are separate tests.

Three questions to ask the seller:

  1. Which lot number is this certificate for?
  2. Who ran the test, and are they independent of you?
  3. Does the report confirm identity by mass spectrometry, or purity alone?

What don't we know?

  • Whether repeated IV use is safe. No randomized trial of adequate size has tested it.
  • Whether the injectable form lightens skin. The trials listed here tested glutathione taken by mouth.
  • Whether the reported kidney and skin harms are rare or common. The record gives no rates.
  • What is in any given vial.

The other side

Small trials of glutathione taken by mouth reported modest skin lightening. A personal result is real to the person who had it. It cannot separate the compound from the vial, or show what repeated use does over time.

What would change this record?

  • A properly designed randomized safety trial of IV glutathione, large enough to give a clear answer. A trial of glutathione taken by mouth would not do it.

More questions about injectable glutathione

Is injectable glutathione FDA approved?

No. The FDA has not approved it for any injectable use, and it has no EMA marketing authorisation for injectable use.

Is IV glutathione safe?

Nobody knows. A published safety review called the data for IV glutathione inadequate. It cited reports of kidney and skin harms after heavy, repeated use without supervision.

Has injectable glutathione been tested in people?

Not in any randomized trial listed on this record. Its two randomized trials tested glutathione taken by mouth. One published review looked at the safety evidence for IV use and found it inadequate.

What is injectable glutathione used for?

For skin lightening and detox, off label. The record says it became popular for those uses, especially in wellness clinics, and that it was not developed or approved for them.

Is glutathione banned in sport?

It is not named on WADA's list. That is not clearance.
