Not approved by the FDA or the EMA. The strongest human evidence on the record is one small Russian randomized trial in elderly COVID-19 patients.

Thymalin is a mixture of small peptides from calf thymus, with no single molecule to draw. These strands stand for the mixture. Their number and length are not data.

Short answer

As of September 2026, the FDA and the EMA have not approved Thymalin. The strongest human evidence is one small randomized Russian trial in elderly patients with severe COVID-19. The record says it has been used in Russia and some other countries as a registered immune drug. It is a mixture with no single defined molecule, and you cannot tell from the outside what a vial holds.

What is Thymalin?

Thymalin is a mixture of small peptides extracted from calf thymus tissue, with no single defined molecule. Researchers including Vladimir Khavinson and Vladimir Morozov developed it in the Soviet Union, starting in the 1970s and 1980s. The record says it has been used in Russia and some other countries as a registered drug for the immune system.

Does Thymalin work?

One small Russian trial reported faster immune-marker recovery and fewer hospital deaths when Thymalin was added to standard care for elderly patients with severe COVID-19. Nobody knows if that holds up: no large randomized trial run to Western standards exists outside Russia.

What we found. 1 completed randomized trial, with 80 patients. 1 long-term observational study, not randomized. 1 published review.

An observational study can find a link. It cannot show what caused it.

Is Thymalin safe?

On this record, nobody knows. It holds no safety finding for Thymalin, in people or in animals. Thymalin is a mixture of peptides with no single defined molecule, and the record says that limits the standard study of how the body handles it. It has never been evaluated in a US-registered clinical trial. All of that is about the compound. The vial is taken up after the legal status.

What is in a vial sold as Thymalin?

The record says Thymalin has been used in Russia and some other countries as a registered drug. It does not say how a vial reaches a buyer elsewhere. It is an extract with no single defined molecule, which the record says makes it harder to standardize as a drug. A "research use only" label guarantees nothing about purity. A certificate of analysis counts only if it names your lot number, a lab with no stake in the result, and the method used. Purity and identity are separate tests.

Three questions to ask the seller:

  1. Which lot number is this certificate for?
  2. Who ran the test, and are they independent of you?
  3. Does the report confirm identity by mass spectrometry, or purity alone?

What don't we know?

  • Whether the COVID-19 finding holds up. It comes from one small trial of 80 patients.
  • Whether it lowers deaths in aging people. The one study of that on this record was not randomized.
  • What the mixture contains, peptide by peptide. It is not one characterized molecule.
  • What is in any given vial.

The other side

Thymalin has been a registered drug in Russia and some other countries. A personal result is real to the person who had it. It cannot separate the compound from the vial, or from a recovery under way.

What would change this record?

  • A randomized trial that is registered internationally and large enough to settle the question.
  • A standardized, well-characterized formulation for that trial to test.

More questions about Thymalin

Is Thymalin approved by the FDA?

No. The FDA has not approved it, and the record says it was never evaluated in a US-registered clinical trial. It has no EMA marketing authorisation.

Is Thymalin approved anywhere?

The record's word is "registered", in Russia and some other countries, as an immunomodulator. It names none of the other countries and holds no official document for the claim.

Has Thymalin been tested in people?

Yes. One randomized Russian trial tested it in 80 elderly patients with severe COVID-19. A long-term observational study, not randomized, also reported on Thymalin and epithalon.

Is Thymalin the same as thymosin alpha-1?

No. Thymalin is a mixture of peptides extracted from calf thymus. Thymosin alpha-1 is a single peptide fragment, first isolated from thymus tissue and later made in the lab.

Is Thymalin banned in sport?

It is not named on WADA's list. That is not clearance.
