Oxytocin (Pitocin)

Also known as Pitocin and Syntocinon.

Approved by the FDA since 1962 for labor and for bleeding after birth. Its social-bonding use has no large, replicated, FDA-reviewed trial behind it.

Short answer

As of September 2026, oxytocin is an approved medicine in the US and across EU markets, for use in childbirth. Its use for social or behavioral effects is experimental, with mixed results, and the FDA has not approved it. If a vial sold as oxytocin reached you outside medical care, none of that evidence covers it, and you cannot tell from the outside what it holds.

What is oxytocin?

Oxytocin is a small hormone, made in the brain, that triggers contractions of the womb in childbirth and milk release in breastfeeding. The lab-made version was the first peptide hormone ever chemically synthesized, by the biochemist Vincent du Vigneaud in 1953. Hospitals have used it in childbirth ever since, and the record dates the Pitocin approval to 1962.

Does oxytocin work?

For childbirth, the FDA approved it to start or strengthen labor and to control heavy bleeding after delivery. For social or behavioral effects, nobody knows: many small randomized trials have given inconsistent results.

What we found. 10+ completed randomized trials counted on the record. 2 study rows are listed below, so the number shows with a plus sign until every trial is listed. Neither row is a single named trial. One is a review that pools trials, and the other stands for many small trials. A third entry on the record is the original 1962 approval file, and it sits in the legal section.

Is oxytocin safe?

For the approved childbirth medicine, the record names two main concerns: overstimulation of the womb, and water intoxication with low blood sodium at high exposure. Obstetric teams give it under close monitoring because of the first. The record cites decades of human-use data in childbirth care. For the social research, it lists no safety findings. None of that reaches a product obtained outside medical care, which is where the next section starts.

What is in a vial sold as oxytocin?

The approved medicine is used in hospital childbirth care, under close monitoring. This record holds no sign that oxytocin is sold outside medical care. If a vial reached you another way, nothing above tested it, and the checklist lists what to ask the seller.

What don't we know?

  • Whether it has any reliable social or behavioral effect. Small trials give inconsistent results.
  • Whether it helps in autism. That research remains experimental.
  • What a large trial of the social use would show. No large, replicated, FDA-reviewed trial has shown an effect.
  • What is in any vial that did not come through medical care.

The other side

In childbirth care, oxytocin comes with a hospital team and close monitoring, and with decades of human-use data. The social research is real research too, run as randomized trials. Its results so far are mixed and often not repeated.

What would change this record?

  • A large, pre-registered randomized trial of the form used in the social research, on one specific social or behavioral outcome, with the result repeated. It would change the record for that use.

More questions about oxytocin

What is oxytocin approved for?

In the US, to start or strengthen labor and to control bleeding after birth. The record also calls it an approved obstetric hormone across EU markets.

Is oxytocin the same as Pitocin?

Yes. Pitocin is a brand name for oxytocin, and the record lists Syntocinon as another name.

Is oxytocin approved for autism or social bonding?

No. The record says its use for social or behavioral effects is investigational and is not an FDA-approved use.

Does oxytocin increase trust?

Nobody knows. Many small randomized trials have looked at trust and social behavior, and their results are inconsistent.

Is oxytocin banned in sport?

It is not named on WADA's list. That is not clearance.
