Short answer

As of September 2026, pramlintide is an approved medicine in the US. The FDA approved it in 2005 as Symlin, for use alongside mealtime insulin in adults with diabetes. It is not currently marketed in the EU. If a vial sold as pramlintide reached you outside a pharmacy, the approval trials did not test it, and you cannot tell from the outside what it holds.

What is pramlintide?

Pramlintide is a synthetic, slightly modified version of amylin, a hormone the pancreas releases alongside insulin. Amylin Pharmaceuticals developed it as an add-on treatment, because people with diabetes are short of amylin. The FDA approved it in 2005 as Symlin.

Does pramlintide work?

For its approved use, the FDA reviewed the trials and approved it. That use is alongside mealtime insulin, in adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who still need better blood sugar control.

What we found. 5+ completed randomized trials counted on the record. 3 study rows listed below, so the number shows with a plus sign until every trial is listed.

Is pramlintide safe?

The record names two main concerns. The first is a significant risk of severe low blood sugar when it is combined with insulin. The second is stomach and gut side effects. Recent real-world and long-term outcome data are limited, because most of the main evidence dates to the mid-2000s. All of this is the record of Symlin. It says nothing about a vial from any other source, which the vial section covers.

What is in a vial sold as pramlintide?

The approval trials above tested Symlin, the maker's product. This record holds no sign that pramlintide is sold outside pharmacies. If a vial reached you by another road, none of those trials tested it, and the checklist lists what to ask the seller.

What don't we know?

  • What recent real-world use shows. Most of the main evidence dates to the mid-2000s.
  • What long-term outcomes look like. Those data are limited.
  • Whether pramlintide plus insulin does better than today's automated insulin delivery systems.
  • What is in any vial that did not come from a pharmacy.

The other side

Symlin comes with a prescription and a doctor's care, and the record describes a long clinical trial history. It is still an approved drug in the US. It is used less often now that simpler, newer diabetes treatments are available.

What would change this record?

  • A modern controlled trial comparing pramlintide plus insulin with current automated insulin delivery systems.
