Dulaglutide (Trulicity)

Also known as Trulicity.

Approved in the US and the EU for type 2 diabetes. Long-term data beyond the follow-up of its large heart trial, REWIND, remain limited.

Short answer

As of September 2026, dulaglutide is an approved medicine in the US and the EU for type 2 diabetes. In the US it is also approved to cut major heart events in adults with type 2 diabetes. The FDA approvals cover Trulicity. The approval trials did not test any other vial sold as dulaglutide, and from the outside you cannot tell what one holds.

What is dulaglutide?

Dulaglutide joins a modified piece of GLP-1, a gut hormone, to an antibody fragment. That design makes it last much longer in the body than natural GLP-1. Eli Lilly makes it, and the FDA first approved it in 2014 as Trulicity for type 2 diabetes.

Does dulaglutide work?

For type 2 diabetes, the FDA and the EMA reviewed the trials and approved it. In 2020 the FDA added a second use: cutting major heart events in adults with type 2 diabetes, with or without existing heart disease.

What we found. 9+ completed randomized trials counted on the record. 3 study rows listed below, so the number shows with a plus sign until every trial is listed. One row stands for a program of trials, and one is a further analysis of REWIND.

Is dulaglutide safe?

The record names stomach and gut side effects as a common concern. The medicine also carries a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors seen in animal studies. Long-term data beyond REWIND's follow-up remain limited. So do head-to-head outcome data against newer drugs of its kind. Each of those points describes Trulicity. A vial with a different origin has its own section below.

What is in a vial sold as dulaglutide?

The trials above tested Eli Lilly's own product, sold as Trulicity. This record holds no sign that dulaglutide is sold outside pharmacies. If a vial reached you by some other path, none of those trials tested it, and the checklist lists what to ask the seller.

What don't we know?

  • What happens beyond the follow-up of the REWIND trial. Long-term data remain limited.
  • Whether its outcomes match those of newer drugs of its kind. Head-to-head data remain limited.
  • What is in any vial that did not come from a pharmacy.

The other side

Trulicity comes with a prescription and a doctor's care, and a trial of about 9,900 patients stands behind its heart-risk approval. The gaps on this page are the years after REWIND, and direct comparison with newer drugs.

What would change this record?

  • A head-to-head trial of heart outcomes or deaths that compares dulaglutide directly with newer GLP-1/GIP drugs.

More questions about dulaglutide

Is Trulicity the same as dulaglutide?

Yes. Trulicity is the brand name for dulaglutide.

What is dulaglutide approved for?

In the US: blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes, and cutting major heart events in adults with type 2 diabetes. The EMA approved it for type 2 diabetes.

What did the REWIND trial find?

Fewer major heart events with dulaglutide than with placebo. REWIND was published in 2019 with about 9,900 patients, and it was the basis for the 2020 label change.

Is dulaglutide approved for weight loss?

Not on this record. It lists two approved uses in the US, and both are in type 2 diabetes.
